Online or live classroom training is available and is offered broadly to anyone in a congregation/ agency. Either training is acceptable for all paid and volunteer church personnel .
As per our Safe Church Education and Training Policy, Safe Church Training utilizes the Safeguarding our Children and Safeguarding God’s People materials developed by The Episcopal Church and also includes training on prevention of sexual harassment and exploitation in addition to prevention of abuse. Both parts of the training are required for certification. Only training using materials approved by The Episcopal Church is acceptable by the Diocese of Southern Ohio.
Online training is available when you are and is self-paced. You can enroll and access the training through the DSO Learning Portal.
To access the learning portal, you will be required to register before beginning. Once you have registered, you can log-in and complete the required lessons at your own pace.
In-person training will be held periodically for those who are unable to complete online training. All approved live training opportunities are scheduled through the diocese. Dates for any scheduled trainings will be listed here.
Local congregations/agencies/faith communities are encouraged to keep a copy of any and all program certificates in their respective files.
- Progress and completion for participants in Online Training are recorded automatically by Praesidium. You will be required to save and upload a copy of your certificate to the Learning Portal when you have completed the required modules. You should also send a copy to the leadership of your congregation.
- Certificates of Program Completion for Live Training are issued by the diocese and will be sent to the email address provided on the participant’s registration. The trainer will notify the diocesan office of the names of those who have successfully completed the training so that the certificates may be issued.
Re-Certification must be repeated a minimum of once every five (5) years. It will be the responsibility of the individual to keep his/her training certificate current in order to comply with Safe Church Policy expectations.
Re-certification is available online, and consists of one (1) training module: Abuse Prevention Refresher. This module takes about 20 minutes to complete.
To complete the Abuse Prevention refresher, log in to your account in Praesidium.
Choose Abuse Prevention Refresher. Make sure to save a copy of your certificate when you have completed the module and send a copy to the leadership of your congregation. Send a copy to firstname.lastname@example.org so that the diocese may update our records.
The Abuse Prevention Refresher certificate will only be accepted for individuals with a record of previously having completed either live training or all required modules of online training.
