SUMMARY:National Day of Human Trafficking Awareness
DESCRIPTION:January 11 is the National Day of Human Trafficking Awareness\, as recognized by the US Senate in 2007. There will be a prayer service and an address by a survivor of human trafficking. All are invited to attend\, and a simple process of advance registration is required. You can register here: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZwvcu-hpjIpGNQS8rBDjBm4PEF8JWkBgfpb  \nYou can learn more about National Human Trafficking Prevention Month here: https://www.state.gov/national-human-trafficking-prevention-month/ \nWhether or not you plan to attend the January 11 Zoom event\, you can join the fight against human trafficking by helping raise awareness in your parish and in any other part of the Episcopal Church where you are active. SUMMARY:Documentary viewing: Who We Are: A Chronicle of Racism in America
DESCRIPTION:The Becoming Beloved Community Team of St. Barnabas\, Montgomery\, invites you to join us for a morning of reflection as we watch the thought-provoking documentary film Who We Are: A Chronicle of Racism in America\, on Saturday\, Feb. 4 at 9 a.m. at the Mariemont Theater. \nThis film examines the history of racism in America with archival footage woven together with personal testimonies revealing stories of an often forgotten past\, while pointing to our shared responsibility to create a better country in our lifetimes. As people of faith\, we continue to seek ways to learn about the history and impacts of racism on our culture today and work towards building God’s dream of Beloved Community in our time. \nFollowing the movie\, there will be a brief opportunity for conversation and reflection on this powerful documentary. This event is free and open to friends and others beyond St. Barnabas. Snacks will be provided\, although feel free to bring your own favorite snacks and drinks as well! Please RSVP here.

SUMMARY:A Church Alive: Hearing the Stories of a Queer Church with AIDS
DESCRIPTION:Presented by The Ohio State University Center for the Study of Religion\, LOVEboldly & Stonewall Columbus \nFriday\, March 24\, 7 p.m.\nTrinity Episcopal Church on Capitol Square \nIn 1987 the Metropolitan Community Church of San Francisco (MCCSF) started recording their worship services. The queer-identified church was located in the Castro\, the city’s gay neighborhood and ground zero of the AIDS epidemic there. They recorded the services so that people too sick to attend could still be part of church life. And the recordings that remain tell vivid stories about what the years before AIDS treatment were like for a community of queer believers who turned to church to get through a crisis. \nHistorian Lynne Gerber has been working with MCCSF’s archive of recordings for over a decade. In 2021 she and two co-authors partnered with OSU’s American Religious Sounds Project (ARSP) to create “The Pink and Purple Church in the Castro\,” an online gallery exhibit that tells the story of MCCSF largely through its audio recordings. Gerber and ARSP co-director Isaac Weiner will be in conversation about MCCSF’s history and its archive\, what it tells us about queer faith and the history of AIDS\, and how sound can evoke religious stories\, worlds\, and lives. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Balancing Action and Contemplation
DESCRIPTION:St. Stephen’s\, Columbus\, will offer a six-session Zoom class entitled\, “Balancing Action & Contemplation” will meet weekly from 7 to 8 p.m. starting Thursday\, April 20\, and will run through May 25. This class is designed for folks who have a heart for social justice and will be facilitated by St. Stephen’s parishioner Jamie Massa. \nHere is a brief summary of the six-week class. \n\nContemplation: Some form of contemplative practice is necessary to be able to detach from your own agenda\, your own anger\, your own ego\, and your own fear.\nAlternative Consciousness: What you are doing in contemplation is moving to a level beneath your thoughts: the level of pure and naked being.\nWatching the River: It is helpful to become aware of one’s thoughts and feelings through simple contemplative practices like: centering prayer\, Lectio Divina\, welcoming prayer\, Yoga\, Tai Chi\, and other meditative movement\, wandering or sitting in nature or simply focusing on your breath.\nBecoming Pure in Heart: For Jesus\, prayer seems to be a matter of waiting in love\, returning to love\, trusting that love is the unceasing stream of reality.\nAction AND Contemplation: We need both action and contemplation to have a whole spiritual journey. It doesn’t matter which comes first; action may lead you to contemplation and contemplation may lead you to action.\nSummary: Over time—months\, years\, a full lifetime—contemplation gradually opens our hearts\, minds\, and bodies to Love as our True Self and right action.\n\nMore information and sign up here.
