SUMMARY:Making Room at the Table: The story of the Philadelphia Eleven
DESCRIPTION:An exclusive showing of The Philadelphia Eleven is scheduled for Saturday\, January 20 at 10 a.m. at the Esquire Theater in Cincinnati. \nThe documentary film shows how a brave group of women shattered the stained-glass ceiling on July 29\, 1974\, by challenging the very core of patriarchal culture to seek ordination as priests in the Episcopal Church. It is a powerful story of faith and conviction. It is a story for all of us\, regardless of faith tradition. \nThere is a suggested donation of $10 per person.

SUMMARY:Scripture's Spectrum: Queer\, Trans\, and Non-Binary Bible Readings
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday Evenings in Lent at Christ Church\, Dayton\nSoup supper served at 6 p.m.\, program starts at 6:15 p.m. \n\nThe stories of the Bible capture humanity’s quest to understand ourselves and our relationship with God. This makes it vitally important to see the full range of humanity represented and belonging in God’s family.  In this series\, taught by Bible scholar Dr. Esther Brownsmith\, we will move beyond the “clobber texts” to seek out biblical stories of people who range across the spectrum of gender and sexuality. By reflecting on these stories and their positive portrayals of embodied identities\, we will learn how to embrace ourselves and our neighbors more fully\, confident in God’s abundant love. \nFebruary 21: Joseph and the Rainbow Princess Dress\nFebruary 28: Redefining Masculinity with Daniel the Eunuch\nMarch 6: “Whither Thou Goest”: Ruth’s Sapphic Steadfastness\nMarch 13: The Non-Binary Wisdom of Mordecai and Qohelet\nMarch 20: Imagining a Genderfluid God

SUMMARY:The Way of the Cross: Jesus at the Border
DESCRIPTION:A new expression of the traditional Stations of the Cross\, “Jesus at the Border” is an exploration of migrant journeys to the border between the United States and Mexico. As racist rhetoric about walls and steel slat fences grows louder\, the stories of people making the dangerous journey to the United States are all but silenced. To highlight the human stories of migration as an antidote and counternarrative to the criminalization of migration\, participants will see and hear stories of migrants at each station of Jesus’ journey to the Cross\, because Jesus was a migrant (Matthew 2:13-15)\, Christ is present in migrants (Matthew 25:31-46)\, and no one is illegal. \nThere will be a discussion and opportunity to share stories following this multicultural and bilingual (Spanish/English) service. SUMMARY:Author event for "The Gospel of Peace" with John Dear
DESCRIPTION:Peacemaker\, author\, and Nobel Peace Prize nominee\, Father John Dear\, will speak about and sign copies of his new book\, The Gospel of Peace: A Commentary on Matthew\, Mark\, and Luke from the Perspective of Nonviolence\, on Friday\, April 12 at 7 p.m. at St. Thomas\, Terrace Park. \nThe book is the first ever commentary on the Synoptic Gospels from the perspective of active nonviolence in the tradition of Gandhi and Dr. King. In this original work\, Fr. John walks us through every line of the three synoptic Gospels pointing out Jesus’ practice and teachings on nonviolence\, peace\, and universal love and invites us to follow him \nBooks will be available for purchase and signing that evening and at church prior to the event. \nThe Rev. John Dear has devoted his life to pursuing nonviolence. After graduating magna cum laude from Duke University\, he joined the Society of Jesus in 1982. During subsequent years\, Dear continued his studies\, earning two master’s degrees in theology. Working with the poor and homeless\, and refugees in El Salvador\, he developed a first hand look at the devastating effect of violence in the world. Also\, as founder of Pax Christi in the Bay Area\, he worked with Mother Teresa to remove execution orders for prisoners on death row. \nHis nonviolent resistance to nuclear armaments\, war\, and injustice found him arrested numerous times\, serving prison time for his efforts. Dear served as executive director of the Fellowship of Reconciliation\, the largest interfaith peace organization in the United States\, from 1998-2001. After September 11\, 2001\, he was tapped by the Red Cross to coordinate chaplains for the Family Assistance Center in Manhattan where he met with countless families and friends of those killed and missing after the attacks on the World Trade Center. \nTen years ago Dear left the Jesuits when his mission for nonviolence was hindered by restrictions placed on him. He remains a priest in Monterey\, California. \nDear has received numerous honors and awards for his work around the world. He has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize several times including a 2008 nomination by Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
