SUMMARY:Advocacy Workshop: Countering Extremism through Engagement
DESCRIPTION:As Episcopalians\, do you find yourself asking the following questions? \n\nAs Christians how do we take the principles we hear from the pulpit and apply them in a Christlike way to our shared public life in Ohio?\nHow do we counter the extremism operating in our state without cultivating hate for others?\nHow can the church be a place of healing and liberation for both the oppressor and the oppressed?\nHow does the Ohio statehouse work?\nHow can we begin to organize for the dignity of our neighbors and affect meaningful policy change at the state level now?\n\nJoin Trinity\, Capitol Square and other leaders across the Diocese of Southern Ohio on Saturday\, January 31 to explore each of these questions and more as we gather together to inspire\, inform and catalyze our commitment to loving our neighbors in Ohio. \nKeynote Speaker Maria Bruno will offer a compelling vision of how we fight extremism in Ohio’s state and local government by building community\, holding out hope for transformation and not spreading hate. Then\, Rachel Coyle will lead a seminar\, “How Things Work at the Ohio Statehouse?” for a non-partisan nuts and bolts look at both the political process that results in bills being passed and how to advocate effectively for issues in Ohio. And then finally\, the Rev. Nick Bates will share how people of faith are currently organizing at the state level and facilitate small group discussions for how we can leave this gathering ready to engage as Episcopalians. Learn more \nSchedule \n9 am – Welcome & Opening Prayer\, Keynote Address with Maria Bruno\n9:25 – Q&A\n9:50 – Workshop: How Things Work at the Statehouse with Rachel Coyle\n11:15 – Workshop: Organizing at the Statehouse as Faith Communities (Nick Bates)\n11:25 – Breakout Groups & Reporting Back\n12:10 – Closing Prayer & Sending \nRegistration \nInvitees: Everyone! You do not have to be Episcopalian to attend\, though some content may be oriented toward Episcopal Church teachings and values. Registration deadline is Jan. 29. Register here. \nQuestions about this event? \nContact the Rev. Jed Dearing\, rector of Trinity\, Capitol Square at revjed@trinitycolumbus.org.

SUMMARY:A Celebration of Women: Lifting up women composers
DESCRIPTION:Taking place during International Women’s History month\, this event highlights and supports the work of women composers. Although historically marginalized as creators\, this concert hopes to bring to audiences a wide variety of music that spans across hundreds of years\, right to the very beginning of recorded Western music. Professional group Heri et Hodie will sing chant from medieval times. Community choir Musica Sacra will present a portion of a newly commissioned work that premiered just six months ago. Singers from feminist choir MUSE will also present a set. Other special guests from the Greater Cincinnati area will be joining and spotlighting their repertoire by women. \nA freewill offering will benefit Lydia’s House\, working to provide safe housing\, holistic care\, and supportive community\, walking with families from crisis to stability. In 2013 Lydia’s House began as a small residence for women and their children experiencing homelessness\, since that time it has grown to include an affordable housing building\, a second building in May 2022\, and a large shelter expansion in 2024. Learn more at stlydiashouse.org

SUMMARY:No King but the King of Kings: Palm Processions to No Kings Rallys
DESCRIPTION:As Christians who observe Palm Sunday\, we recognize the difference between earthly kingdoms (good or bad) and the Kingdom of Heaven\, whose ruler is our Triune God. When we call out “Hosanna” we are calling out to God\, “Lord Save Us!!” The root of this word\, “Hosanna\,” is the same word that gives us the Name of Jesus\, the one who saves. And so\, on this day of palms\, we see that God answers our cries by sending us the divine Word incarnate\, Jesus Christ\, who alone can save us from ourselves and the time of trial. \nIt is part of our liturgical tradition to march in the public square on Palm Sunday to call attention to the Kingship of our Savior. All are invited to join into a demonstration of Christian Love a day early. Gather one hour prior to the rally for prayer and organizing. In Cincinnati\, meet at Christ Church Cathedral at noon (rally 1-3 pm) and in Columbus\, meet at Trinity on Capitol Square at 3 pm (rally 4 to 6 pm). Bring palms\, processional crosses\, thuribles\, acolyte torches\, robes/vestments\, banners\, signs\, a Sharpie marker\, telephone\, weather appropriate clothing\, good shoes and a water bottle. The liturgical color is red. \nFor more information\, contact the Rev. Chris Slane at rev.cslane@icloud.com.
