Each first Tuesday of the month\, we gather\, pray\, and discuss a book the hosts believe will bring us closer to the dream God has for us as God’s beloved children. \nOur April\, May\, June book is The Night Is Long but Light Comes in the Morning: Meditations for Racial Healing by Catherine Meeks! Request a complimentary copy of the book in the format of your choice: hardcover\, paperback\, audible or kindle. \nReading the book is not mandatory for this book study! Whether you read a few pages or the whole book\, our conversation will be better with you there. Just prepare for spoilers! SUMMARY:Beloved Community Radical Rest Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Exploring the Countercultural Nature of Holy Rest Practices\nCome away and rest… You are invited to join Miriam McKenney\, missioner for beloved community\, for a retreat centered on the holy practice of radical rest. Spend time alone or in community walking the lake or forest trails\, resting in the hammocks\, sharing stories\, napping\, reading\, visiting the farm\, and finding ways to just slow down. \nOur community time will include a collective rest experience in the chapel overlooking Lake Leo\, communal worship and reflection\, and options for group activities\, such as spiritual collage. On Friday evening\, we’ll have a porch fellowship complete with s’mores\, cocktails\, and mocktails. There will also be tables set aside for Silent Meals during all dining hours. Join us as we put the rest in this rest retreat! \nThis retreat is subsidized by the Beloved Community to lower financial barriers to your participation. We will gather at Procter Center to avail ourselves of the many opportunities to slow down\, be in nature\, and be in community. DESCRIPTION:Safe Church training helps us protect children\, youth\, and vulnerable adults by promoting healthy boundaries\, accountability\, and care. It is a practical way to live out our Baptismal Covenant by respecting the dignity of every human being and striving for justice and peace. \nThe training also equips clergy\, staff\, and volunteers to build trust and respond faithfully and appropriately if concerns arise\, helping our congregations remain safe and welcoming places for all. \nThose who prefer an in-person learning experience are invited to attend the daylong training at Procter Camp and Conference Center on February 19. We’ll begin at 10 am and conclude by 3 pm\, with a break for lunch. Participation in this training completes the requirement for service on vestries\, diocesan leadership\, and most other ministry roles. \nTraining is available for adults and teens over 16 years old\, with a responsible adult. DESCRIPTION:Our beloved community book study aims to foster a sense of community as we share and discuss ideas from seminal works of non-fiction and\, now\, fiction. By rooting our individual stories and local stories in our shared scriptural stories\, we aim to follow Jesus more closely and build the beloved community in the Diocese of Southern Ohio. \nOur Fall Book Study will take on Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi. \n\nThe unforgettable New York Times best seller begins with the story of two half-sisters\, separated by forces beyond their control: one sold into slavery\, the other married to a British slaver. Homegoing traces the generations of family who follow\, as their destinies lead them through two continents and three hundred years of history\, each life indelibly drawn\, as Gyasi reveals the legacy of slavery in light of the present day. Effia and Esi are born into different villages in eighteenth-century Ghana. Effia is married off to an Englishman and lives in comfort in the palatial rooms of Cape Coast Castle. Unbeknownst to Effia\, her sister\, Esi\, is imprisoned beneath her in the castle’s dungeons\, sold with thousands of others into the Gold Coast’s booming slave trade\, and shipped off to the United States. One thread of Homegoing follows Effia’s descendants through centuries of warfare in Ghana\, as the Fante and Asante nations wrestle with the slave trade and British colonization. The other thread follows Esi and her children from the plantations of the South to the Civil War and the Great Migration\, from the coal mines of Pratt City\, Alabama\, to the jazz clubs and dope houses of twentieth-century Harlem\, and continues through to the present day. Homegoing makes history visceral\, capturing with singular and stunning immediacy how the memory of captivity is inscribed in the soul of a nation. \nThis book study gathers over three evenings from 7-8 pm: October 7\, November 3\, and December 2.This online gathering takes place on Zoom. DESCRIPTION:Our beloved community book study aims to foster a sense of community as we share and discuss ideas from seminal works of non-fiction and\, now\, fiction. By rooting our individual stories and local stories in our shared scriptural stories\, we aim to follow Jesus more closely and build the beloved community in the Diocese of Southern Ohio. \nOur Fall Book Study will take on Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi. \n\nThe unforgettable New York Times best seller begins with the story of two half-sisters\, separated by forces beyond their control: one sold into slavery\, the other married to a British slaver. Homegoing traces the generations of family who follow\, as their destinies lead them through two continents and three hundred years of history\, each life indelibly drawn\, as Gyasi reveals the legacy of slavery in light of the present day. Effia and Esi are born into different villages in eighteenth-century Ghana. Effia is married off to an Englishman and lives in comfort in the palatial rooms of Cape Coast Castle. Unbeknownst to Effia\, her sister\, Esi\, is imprisoned beneath her in the castle’s dungeons\, sold with thousands of others into the Gold Coast’s booming slave trade\, and shipped off to the United States. One thread of Homegoing follows Effia’s descendants through centuries of warfare in Ghana\, as the Fante and Asante nations wrestle with the slave trade and British colonization. The other thread follows Esi and her children from the plantations of the South to the Civil War and the Great Migration\, from the coal mines of Pratt City\, Alabama\, to the jazz clubs and dope houses of twentieth-century Harlem\, and continues through to the present day. DESCRIPTION:The Ohio Council of Churches\, its partners and allies are asking Christian congregations and other faith communities around the state to publicly declare racism to be a sin\, an offense to God that is incompatible with God’s loving and just vision for humanity. Sermons and other anti-racism messages are sought on or near Oct. 19. \nAccording to the Rev. Dr. Jack Sullivan\, Jr.\, the council’s Executive Director\, racism contradicts the clear teachings of Jesus Christ. Sullivan cited Luke 10:25-37; John 4:1-26; Matthew 28:19; Matthew 22:37-39. Racism and oppression of the stranger are also condemned in the Hebrew Scriptures\, in passages such as Leviticus 19: 33\, and in the Holy Koran\, noted others on the Ohio Council of Churches’ Anti-Racism Team. \nFor congregations\, the council said\, Anti-Racism Sunday on Oct. 19 could begin a 13-week emphasis on detecting\, disrupting\, and dismantling racism in all of its forms and disguises\, culminating in the nation’s celebration of the birthday of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The council is also offering curricula on its website to support deeper congregational and community discussions about how to address and overcome racism. \n“In an era where hard-fought racial justice and diversity firewalls have been attacked and voided\,” commented Sullivan\, “and as faith is being weaponized to give the scandalous appearance of divine endorsement of racialized hate\, Anti-Racism Sunday is an opportunity for Christians and their neighbors of different faiths to clearly and publicly set the record straight: God does not support racism\, and neither do we!” \nAmerican racism not only hurts Black people\, it specifically hurts working-class Whites and other groups as well\, members of the council’s Anti-Racism Team asserted. And in a policy briefing on economic jeopardy written for the AFL-CIO\, scholar Haney Lopez reported\, “When racism triumphs\, all workers lose.” \n“On Anti-Racism Sunday\,” said Sullivan\, “people of faith will continue … to confront racial disinformation with truth; to counter racial misinformation with facts; and to challenge racial fear with love.” \nParticipating congregations and faith leaders are urged to let the council know about their plans. Emails can be directed to info@ohcouncilchs.org. Anti-racism resources are offered on the council’s website. \nThe council\, now marking 105 years\, is a Jesus Christ movement for unity\, justice and peace. Its ministry represents 17 Christian denominations and is the largest and most diverse group of Christians in Ohio. DESCRIPTION:Step away from screens and step into God’s vibrant creation at our upcoming youth retreat! \nTogether we’ll practice unplugging while connecting with God\, one another\, and the world around us. In addition to all of the fun and formative camp activities that Procter has to offer\, youth will also be learning some practical peer ministry skills that will help them to support one another through the challenges and joys of growing up in our complex world. We hope young people will leave the retreat more equipped and energized to share Christ’s love through in their own wonderfully unique ways. \nYouth in grades  6-12 are invited to Procter\, October 10-12 for the Youth Fall Retreat. The retreat will start with dinner on Friday and end after Eucharist on Sunday. DESCRIPTION:Members of the Society of St. Simeon and St. Anna will gather May 28 for a day of fellowship\, learning\, and becoming Beloved Community! \nIn 2023\, several members of the Society of St. Simeon and St. Anna met with Canon Julie Murray and the Rev. Jason Prati to dream about strengthening the community of Society members and offering additional learning and fellowship opportunities beyond the annual luncheon and induction ceremony. The first such event\, a day to visit Ohio’s newest state park and to spend time honoring the history of indigenous and African American people of the area\, will be held on Wednesday\, May 28. \n\n\nThis statue of Shawnee leader Tecumseh stands in front of the Interpretive Center at Great Council State Park.\n\nThe day will begin in Xenia at Great Council State Park\, built on the site of the Shawnee village of Old Chillicothe\, which was once home to Tecumseh and where Daniel Boone was held captive. Visitors will tour the Interpretive Center and learn about Shawnee culture from one of Great Council’s tour guides\, the Rev. Steve Cuff\, a retired priest of the diocese. \nAfter lunch\, the group will travel to Wilberforce to visit the National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center. \nThe event is offered at no-cost to St. Simeon and St. Anna Society members. \nThe diocese is looking into the possibility of offering regional bus/van transportation for this trip if there is sufficient interest. Transportation costs would be the responsibility of the riders. DESCRIPTION:One of the fundamentals of our faith is that we believe God created the world. God created for six days\, and on the seventh day\, God rested. When the Israelites were in the wilderness\, God sent them food to eat\, but not on the Sabbath. God tells us over and over and over again how important it is to keep the Sabbath day sacred. So why is it so hard for us to do it?  \nEverything in our culture pushes us to go faster and do more. Multi-task. What would it look like to single-task? Slow down? Say no to something\, even if we would be great at it? \nOur Rest Retreat offers time\, space\, and community to practice many ways to bring rest into our lives. If resting were easy\, we would all be doing it! We need to practice. \nWe will gather at Procter Center to avail ourselves of the many opportunities to slow down\, be in nature\, and be in community. Join us! \nThis event is partially subsidized by the Beloved Community budget. DESCRIPTION:As we work toward becoming Beloved Community in Southern Ohio\, books can help us explore paths toward healing and reconciliation. Like the stories from holy scripture\, stories in books offer a common language and equal ground to discuss challenging issues and topics while building community. \nEach first Tuesday of the month\, we will gather\, pray\, and discuss a book the hosts believe will bring us closer to the dream God has for us as God’s beloved children. Our title for February and March is The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World by Robin Wall Kimmerer. Participants can request a free copy of the book on the RSVP form. \nReading the book is not mandatory for this book study! Whether you read a few pages or the whole book\, our conversation will be better with you there. Just prepare for spoilers! We’ll talk about the book—our favorite parts\, where we see ourselves\, and what this book has to do with us\, our faith communities\, and our diocese. \nJoin us to discuss texts vital to our understanding of the beloved community in the Diocese of Southern Ohio and beyond. \nOur discussion of The Serviceberry takes place February 4 and March  from 7 to 8 pm. DESCRIPTION:Join the Diocese of Southern Ohio in dismantling systems of oppression\, telling the truth\, and building capacity to be seekers of Beloved Community in our church and in the world. \nThis dismantling racism course is for all clergy and lay people who are required to complete anti-racism training. It’s also for anyone who wishes to build relationships with people across the diocese and seeks to build the beloved community in this corner of God’s creation. We share stories\, scripture\, and the tenets of our faith. Join us. \nThis course is on Tuesday\, Wednesday\, and Thursday afternoons\, February 4\, 5\, 6\, 11\, 12\, and 13\, from noon to 1 p.m. Eastern. Bring your lunch! \nAttend all sessions for certification.
