SUMMARY:Regional Staff Day - St. Philip's\, Circleville
DESCRIPTION:Bishop White invites leaders and people of the diocese to join her and the diocesan staff at regional staff days taking place throughout 2025. These regional days are intended to bring the diocesan staff — a team of people charged with empowering local leaders and building capacity for congregational ministry — physically closer to all corners of our diocese to reduce barriers for face-to-face connection. \nEach regional staff day will include an hour of drop-in fellowship and conversation from 10 to 11 am with snacks and coffee. Following that time\, all traveling staff members are available by appointment. Learn more.

SUMMARY:Sharing Your Good News Beyond Your Walls: Media Relations for Churches
DESCRIPTION:Communications leaders — volunteers and staff\, lay and clergy — are invited to spend a Saturday morning digging into media relations for sharing the Good News of God in Christ through your local faith community. \nChurches often have interesting and inspiring ministries and activities taking place\, but they don’t know who to tell people outside the congregation about them. In this workshop we will talk about what makes a good story\, the basics of a news release\, and how to share your news with local media and with others in The Episcopal Church. \n\nWe’re joined by Melodie Woerman\, a church communications professional with decades of experience both pitching and receiving pitches for media stories. Now a freelance writer with bylines in Episcopal News Service\, This Christian Century\, The Living Church\, and more\, Melodie spent seventeen years as the director of communications for the Episcopal Diocese of Kansas. During her tenure\, she also served many years on the board and as the president of Episcopal Communicators\, a professional network of church communications professionals across and beyond the denomination. \nQuestions about this diocesan program? \nContact Canon Katie Forsyth\, canon for communications\, at kforsyth@diosohio.org. \nRSVP \nThere is no cost to participate in this webinar and no deadline to register. REGISTER HERE.

SUMMARY:Beloved Community Rest Retreat
DESCRIPTION:One of the fundamentals of our faith is that we believe God created the world. God created for six days\, and on the seventh day\, God rested. When the Israelites were in the wilderness\, God sent them food to eat\, but not on the Sabbath. God tells us over and over and over again how important it is to keep the Sabbath day sacred. So why is it so hard for us to do it?  \nEverything in our culture pushes us to go faster and do more. Multi-task. What would it look like to single-task? Slow down? Say no to something\, even if we would be great at it? \nOur Rest Retreat offers time\, space\, and community to practice many ways to bring rest into our lives. If resting were easy\, we would all be doing it! We need to practice. \nWe will gather at Procter Center to avail ourselves of the many opportunities to slow down\, be in nature\, and be in community. Join us! \nThis event is partially subsidized by the Beloved Community budget. If the cost of this retreat presents a barrier to your participation\, please request a Beloved Community grant before filling out a registration form. \nQuestions about this program?\nContact Miriam McKenney\, missioner for Beloved Community\, at mmckenney@diosohio.org. \nAll materials\, staff time\, and group accomodations are subsidized by the Beloved Community budget. \n\nCommuter\, $40 (Saturday only\, includes two meals)\nOvernight\, $100 (includes Friday night accommodations and three meals)\n\nSpace is limited. The deadline to register is April 21. REGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Chrism Mass & Clergy Renewal of Ordination Vows
DESCRIPTION:Bishop White invites the clergy of the Diocese of Southern Ohio to gather together on the Tuesday of Holy Week for our annual service\, renewing ordination vows together and blessing the chrism oil used throughout the diocese in the next year. \nThe Chrism Mass highlights the ministry we share together; a bishop’s ministry is extended symbolically by the chrism oil that will be used in baptism and other rites in each faith community of our diocese over the next year. In praying together the renewal of our vows\, we’re reminded of the commitments made to God and God’s Beloved Community at the time of ordination. \nWe will gather for optional fellowship at 10 am\, with the service beginning at 11 am and lunch at 12:30 pm \nAll clergy are invited to attend these services. Active and canonically resident clergy are expected to attend unless excused by the bishop. The deadline to RSVP is April 1. RSVP here. \nClergy are invited to participate wearing clericals; a group photo will be taken after the service. \nQuestions about this event? \nContact the Rev. Canon Jodi Baron at jbaron@diosohio.org.

SUMMARY:Lenten Quiet Day
DESCRIPTION:Join the Diocese of Southern Ohio and Procter Center for a day spent on retreat. \nThis day-retreat will be centered on the theme of “A Commonplace Lent\,” as offered by Episcopal Relief & Development and Procter’s Co-Executive Director\, Jerusalem Greer. \nDuring this retreat\, Jerusalem will lead participants in exploring two uses of the word “common” through the lens of Lent. The first is the sense that we come together to celebrate “all that we are and all that we have in common” — prayer\, worship\, grace\, love\, community\, service\, and so much more. The second understanding of common is a reflection on the ordinary\, everyday nature of these communal gifts – the kind of of gifts we find in the soil\, the sun\, in water\, and around the table. \nInspired by the wisdom of desert mothers and fathers\, monastics\, and other spiritual leaders\, this Quiet Day for all ages will be infused with prayer\, time for group and personal reflection\, and time spent listening to the wisdom of creation. \nSaturday\, April 12\n10 to 3 pm\, lunch is included. The cost to participate in the Lenten Quiet Day is $40/person. The registration deadline is April 9\, 2025. Click here to register. \nQuestions about this event? Please contact Jerusalem Greer\, co-executive director of Procter Center\, at jgreer@proctercenter.org. \n

SUMMARY:Biblical Killjoys - Christ Church Dayton Lenten Program
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Esther Brownsmith\nChrist Church\, Dayton\, will explore five “feminist killjoys” of the Hebrew Bible: biblical women whose disruptive unhappiness threatens the simple black-and-white morality of the stories around them\, for their 2025 Lenten series. Although their tales are ancient\, these five “antiheroes” can still teach us how to wrestle faithfully with God’s word. This class will be taught by Dr. Esther Brownsmith\, an assistant professor of Hebrew Bible at the University of Dayton and a Christ Episcopal Church parishioner. \nSoup supper served at 6pm\, program starts at 6:15pm \nSample the Series on Sunday\, March 16\, 9 am — Hagar the Uppity\nAs an Egyptian slave impregnated by Abraham\, Hagar’s life was not easy—particularly after Sarah accused her of being too “uppity” and drove her away to the desert. Yet even at the lowest point of her life\, the Bible preserves her voice and gives her a remarkable honor. We will use this story to reflect on how women’s voices—particularly those from the African diaspora—have spoken uncomfortable truths from the ancient world to the present. \nWednesday\, March 19\, 6:15pm — Tamar the Brazen\nMistreated by her in-laws\, the biblical Tamar concocted a bold\, scandalous plan to achieve the security and family that she dreamed of.  In the brazenness of this ancestor of Jesus\, we will find inspiration to insist on justice and act for equity\, even when it means challenging and outwitting those in power. \nWednesday\, March 26\, 6:15pm — Miriam the Proud\nAs the sister of Abraham and Aaron\, Miriam the prophetess had a position of honor. But when she dared to speak against those in authority\, she was punished and silenced. Together\, we will uncover Miriam’s story and legacy\, reflecting together on the endurance of women’s proud prophetic voices. \nWednesday\, April 2\, 6:15pm — Michal the Offended\nMichal\, the daughter of King Saul and wife of King David\, spoke up against David—and paid the price for it. Within the Bible’s careful curation of David’s image\, Michal’s offended unhappiness preserves an alternative view. We will sit with Michal\, listening to her stories\, and discuss our responses when our own “killjoy” impulses resist a simplistic reading of God’s word. \nWednesday\, April 9\, 6:15pm — Jezebel the Harlot\nEveryone thinks they know the story of Queen Jezebel: a seductive idolater who challenged God’s prophets and led Israel into sin. But how much of that story is history\, and how much is later propaganda? In this final week\, we will discuss the legacies of history’s feminist killjoys; we’ll study Scripture “at a slant” to locate traces of our foremothers\, and we’ll share strategies to read the Bible faithfully while honoring those traces.

SUMMARY:Pride Arts Showcase
DESCRIPTION:Thanks in part to grants from Cincinnati Pride and the CCM Harmony Fund\, Lives United/Vidas Unidas will host a cross-disciplinary event featuring LGBTQIA+ artists of Cincinnati during a one-night extravaganza at the Church of Our Saviour/La Iglesia de Nuestro Salvador on Monday\, March 31 at 6 pm. The event will celebrate performing\, visual\, and culinary LGBTQIA+ artists\, most of whom live and work in Cincinnati. Emphasis will be placed on promoting young artists whose art reflects their personal experiences as queer people. The event will begin with an 90-minute performance of these artists’ work. A reception will follow with catering and a visual art installation for attendees to observe and enjoy. Approximately 100 people are expected to attend this event in person\, and hundreds more will join our livestream audience on Facebook and YouTube.\n\nIn observance of Transgender Day of Visibility\, many of the artists invited to perform at this event identify as trans or non-binary. All other artists who do not identify this way will be members of the LGBTQIA+ community or our allies. Artists who are confirmed to participate include musicians from the Poiesis Quartet\, Microbat\, singer-songwriter Garen Gibson\, poet Kay E. Bancroft\, visual artist and drag queen Kyle Angel (Crystal Tubes)\, and drag king Alexander Cameron. Several current and graduate CCM students are confirmed to perform\, including clarinetists Marian Mayen and Casey McGuire.\n\nAnother special guest artist included in this event is Puerto Rican composer\, vocalist\, and pianist Victor Cabezas. We recently commissioned Victor to write a new woodwind ensemble piece with a grant from the CCM Harmony Fund. Victor lives in Cincinnati and will join us for a residency in Cincinnati to rehearse the new work and have it premiered at the concert by the New Downbeat & Friends ensemble.\n\nThis event is free\, ticket reservations are recommended.
