SUMMARY:Summer Beloved Community Book Study

SUMMARY:Summer Beloved Community Book Study
DESCRIPTION:Our July\, August\, and September Beloved Community Book Study turns to the wise words of Howard Thurman in Jesus and the Disinherited\, with a new Foreword by The Rev. Dr. Kelly Brown Douglas. \n“Famously known as the text that Martin Luther King Jr. sought inspiration from in the days leading up to the Montgomery bus boycott\, Howard Thurman’s Jesus and the Disinherited helped shape the civil rights movement and changed our nation’s history forever.” \nJuly 1: forewords & Chapter 1\nAugust 5: Chapters 2&3\nSeptember 2: Chapters 4 & 5 & Epilogue \nReading the book is not mandatory for this book study! Whether you read a few pages or the whole book\, our conversation will be better with you there. Just prepare for spoilers! We’ll talk about the book—our favorite parts\, where we see ourselves\, and what this book has to do with us\, our faith communities\, and our diocese. \nJoin us to discuss texts vital to our understanding of the beloved community in the Diocese of Southern Ohio and beyond. \nQuestions about this diocesan program?\nContact Miriam McKenney\, missioner for Beloved Community\, at mmckenney@diosohio.org. \n\nAll Beloved Community Book Study sessions will take place on Zoom. \nThere is no cost to participate in the Beloved Community Book Study. SUMMARY:Bystander Intervention Training
DESCRIPTION:The human response to witnessing injustice often defaults to fight\, flight\, or freeze. If we are reactive without having foundational tools to respond\, we may not achieve the result we hoped for. If we turn our eyes to injustice\, we can be found complicit. If we freeze\, we may find ourselves in uncomfortable or perilous positions. The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was intentional in helping to train people in civil discourse and nonviolent approaches to conflict resolution. \nSt. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Granville will offer various trainings to help equip God’s people to engage in situations of discomfort. The first training will be Bystander Intervention Training through Right To Be. This one-hour webinar will provide you with the resources to make a decision of action that matches your level of ability and comfort. \nRight To Be shares\, “How can we take action if we don’t know what to do? Right To Be is offering this free\, one-hour\, interactive training to train people on how to safely intervene when you witness street harassment or experience it yourself. During this training\, you’ll learn a clear\, adaptable\, and expert-approved set of tools that have been proven to reduce the prevalence of street harassment: Right To Be’s 5Ds of bystander intervention. \nWe’ll start by deepening our understanding of street harassment and its impact. Then\, we’ll talk through five strategies for intervention: distract\, delegate\, document\, delay\, and direct\, and how to prioritize your own safety while intervening. We’ll also talk about what to do if you’re worried the violence will turn on you and how to avoid escalating the situation. Then\, we’ll talk about what to do if you experience harassment and give you tools to safely get your power back. \nWe’ll have time at the end for practice. Exit polls show 98.8% of attendees leave the training feeling like there is at least one thing they can do the next time they witness harassment.” \nThe training is online and can be accessed anywhere. Please register for a spot in this training by accessing registration here \nIf you have any questions please email Rev. Julia Joyce-Miesse at revjulia@stlukesgranville.org

SUMMARY:History & Storytelling Webinar
DESCRIPTION:This year\, we celebrate 150 years of ministry as the Diocese of Southern Ohio — generations of disciples serving God and joining in the transformation of our communities. In anticipation of this major milestone\, a task force of Southern Ohioans have been working together to gather our history and tell the stories of who we are and who we have been — in discipleship\, in race relationships\, women’s ministries\, LGBTQ+ progress\, and the industrial and economic changes that have affected our communities. \nOn September 4 at 7 pm\, our 150th History & Storytelling Group will host a Zoom webinar for all Southern Ohio Episcopalians. Bishop White will host a panel discussion with diocesan leaders representing significant stories or affinities within our diocese: \n\nThe Rev. Canon Jane Gerdsen\, rector serving St. Barnabas\, Montgomery\, will represent women’s ordination and other changes in our diocese and church that strengthened women’s ministries.\nRobin Holland\, chair of our Commission on Ministry and member of St. Philip\, Columbus\, will represent the resilient presence of our Historically Black congregations.\nJoshua Sherwood\, member of the Diocesan Council and member of St. Peter’s\, Gallipolis\, will represent the legacy and continuing life of post-industrial river parishes in Appalachia.\nThe Rev. Mike Smith\, priest associate at St. Anne\, West Chester\, will represent the significant progress toward inclusion and leadership of LGBTQ+ Christians in our church and diocese.\nThe Very Rev. Owen Thompson\, dean of Christ Church Cathedral\, will represent the Mother Churches which established Episcopal witness throughout our diocese through the founding of new parishes.\n\nShort biographies of each of our panelists are available here. \nPlease join us as we remember\, learn\, and celebrate the complex legacy of the Diocese of Southern Ohio! RSVP to receive your Zoom link.
