DESCRIPTION:Bishop White invites leaders and people of the diocese to join her and the diocesan staff at regional staff days taking place throughout 2025. These regional days are intended to bring the diocesan staff — a team of people charged with empowering local leaders and building capacity for congregational ministry — physically closer to all corners of our diocese to reduce barriers for face-to-face connection. \nEach regional staff day will include an hour of drop-in fellowship and conversation from 10 to 11 am with snacks and coffee. DESCRIPTION:The human response to witnessing injustice often defaults to fight\, flight\, or freeze. If we are reactive without having foundational tools to respond\, we may not achieve the result we hoped for. If we turn our eyes to injustice\, we can be found complicit. If we freeze\, we may find ourselves in uncomfortable or perilous positions. The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was intentional in helping to train people in civil discourse and nonviolent approaches to conflict resolution. \nSt. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Granville will offer various trainings to help equip God’s people to engage in situations of discomfort. The first training will be Bystander Intervention Training through Right To Be. This one-hour webinar will provide you with the resources to make a decision of action that matches your level of ability and comfort. \nRight To Be shares\, “How can we take action if we don’t know what to do? Right To Be is offering this free\, one-hour\, interactive training to train people on how to safely intervene when you witness street harassment or experience it yourself. During this training\, you’ll learn a clear\, adaptable\, and expert-approved set of tools that have been proven to reduce the prevalence of street harassment: Right To Be’s 5Ds of bystander intervention. \nWe’ll start by deepening our understanding of street harassment and its impact. Then\, we’ll talk through five strategies for intervention: distract\, delegate\, document\, delay\, and direct\, and how to prioritize your own safety while intervening. We’ll also talk about what to do if you’re worried the violence will turn on you and how to avoid escalating the situation. Then\, we’ll talk about what to do if you experience harassment and give you tools to safely get your power back. \nWe’ll have time at the end for practice. Exit polls show 98.8% of attendees leave the training feeling like there is at least one thing they can do the next time they witness harassment.” \nThe training is online and can be accessed anywhere. DESCRIPTION:This year\, we celebrate 150 years of ministry as the Diocese of Southern Ohio — generations of disciples serving God and joining in the transformation of our communities. In anticipation of this major milestone\, a task force of Southern Ohioans have been working together to gather our history and tell the stories of who we are and who we have been — in discipleship\, in race relationships\, women’s ministries\, LGBTQ+ progress\, and the industrial and economic changes that have affected our communities. \nOn September 4 at 7 pm\, our 150th History & Storytelling Group will host a Zoom webinar for all Southern Ohio Episcopalians. Bishop White will host a panel discussion with diocesan leaders representing significant stories or affinities within our diocese: \n\nThe Rev. Canon Jane Gerdsen\, rector serving St. Barnabas\, Montgomery\, will represent women’s ordination and other changes in our diocese and church that strengthened women’s ministries.\nRobin Holland\, chair of our Commission on Ministry and member of St. Philip\, Columbus\, will represent the resilient presence of our Historically Black congregations.\nJoshua Sherwood\, member of the Diocesan Council and member of St. Peter’s\, Gallipolis\, will represent the legacy and continuing life of post-industrial river parishes in Appalachia.\nThe Rev. Mike Smith\, priest associate at St. Anne\, West Chester\, will represent the significant progress toward inclusion and leadership of LGBTQ+ Christians in our church and diocese.\nThe Very Rev. For our second event\, presented by The Hyde Park Church Collective\, a collaboration among four local Christian congregations\, we are honored to welcome Dr. Dan McClellan\, biblical scholar and bestselling author\, for an evening of insight\, clarity\, and faith-rooted dialogue. Dr. McClellan’s talk\, “The Bible Says So: What We Get Right (and Wrong) about Scripture’s Most Controversial Issues\,” will explore how Scripture has been interpreted and misinterpreted in conversations about gender\, sexuality\, justice\, politics\, and more. \nThis is a powerful opportunity to reflect together on how to read the Bible faithfully in a modern context. The evening begins with a light dinner at 6:30 pm in the Great Hall\, followed by the presentation at 7:00 pm in the Sanctuary. \nDr. Dan McClellan is an award-winning public scholar of the Bible and the author of *The Bible Says So: What We Get Right (and Wrong) about Scripture’s Most Controversial Issues*\, a *New York Times* and *Publishers’ Weekly* bestseller. He engages over a million followers through social media\, online courses\, and his podcast *Data Over Dogma*.
