SUMMARY:Sacred Decision Making Workshop
DESCRIPTION:On November 7-8 Marcia Patton and Nora Percival will present a two day workshop on consensus decision-making at St. Stephen’s\, Columbus.\n\nMarcia and Nora are the authors of Sacred Decision Making: Consensus in Faith Communities. Consensus decision-making in a church setting promotes inclusivity\, is more egalitarian and less patriarchal than other decision-making models\, encourages a collaborative spirit\, fosters the emergence of unanticipated solutions\, offers an alternative to avoiding issues for fear of stirring up trouble\, demonstrates the belief that everyone’s voice is important\, and shows that the people in the room are more important than the decision in question. It embodies the belief that how we work together is as important as what we do and it clearly invites God into the process. Throughout the training Patton and Percival will provide real-life examples\, planning and meeting ideas\, and essential steps to develop a consensus decision-making model. This training is for anyone who wants to explore a method of decision-making that can truly be considered a “kingdom-practice.”\n\nThe workshop will take place at Saint Stephen’s (30 W. Woodruff Avenue). The Friday evening portion will run from 7:00 – 8:30 PM\, and the Saturday session will run from 9-4 with a break for lunch. Attendees are expected to attend both sessions. The workshop is free\, but registration is limited. Go to ststephenscolumbus.org to register.

SUMMARY:Beloved Community Book Study: Homegoing
DESCRIPTION:Our beloved community book study aims to foster a sense of community as we share and discuss ideas from seminal works of non-fiction and\, now\, fiction. By rooting our individual stories and local stories in our shared scriptural stories\, we aim to follow Jesus more closely and build the beloved community in the Diocese of Southern Ohio. \nOur Fall Book Study will take on Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi. \n\nThe unforgettable New York Times best seller begins with the story of two half-sisters\, separated by forces beyond their control: one sold into slavery\, the other married to a British slaver. Homegoing traces the generations of family who follow\, as their destinies lead them through two continents and three hundred years of history\, each life indelibly drawn\, as Gyasi reveals the legacy of slavery in light of the present day. Effia and Esi are born into different villages in eighteenth-century Ghana. Effia is married off to an Englishman and lives in comfort in the palatial rooms of Cape Coast Castle. Unbeknownst to Effia\, her sister\, Esi\, is imprisoned beneath her in the castle’s dungeons\, sold with thousands of others into the Gold Coast’s booming slave trade\, and shipped off to the United States. One thread of Homegoing follows Effia’s descendants through centuries of warfare in Ghana\, as the Fante and Asante nations wrestle with the slave trade and British colonization. The other thread follows Esi and her children from the plantations of the South to the Civil War and the Great Migration\, from the coal mines of Pratt City\, Alabama\, to the jazz clubs and dope houses of twentieth-century Harlem\, and continues through to the present day. Homegoing makes history visceral\, capturing with singular and stunning immediacy how the memory of captivity is inscribed in the soul of a nation. \nThis book study gathers over three evenings from 7-8 pm: October 7\, November 3\, and December 1.This online gathering takes place on Zoom. Register. \nThere is no registration deadline\, however\, if requesting to be mailed a copy of the book\, please register no later than September 30.

SUMMARY:Webinar - Faith Formation in 2025 (& beyond): The Shift to Intergenerationality
DESCRIPTION:In many of our churches\, traditional Christian formation programs such as youth group and Sunday School are no longer “working” in the ways they used to. Attendance is often sporadic and it can be hard to find committed leaders to work with various age groups. \nIn this online gathering sponsored by Province V of the Episcopal Church\, Sarah Bentley Allred will share current research and trends from across the church\, including how the intergenerational movement is gaining momentum. While there is no “silver bullet” for this new era of church ministry\, intergenerationality offers a wealth of possibilities for the formation of all members of the body of Christ. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Mini CCD
DESCRIPTION:Join the wider diocese for a day of learning and encountering tools for congregations of all sizes\, locations\, and conditions to be more healthy\, faithful\, and effective as they live out God’s call. This Mini College for Congregational Development (or Mini-CCD) is an opportunity in particular for clergy and lay leaders who have not yet attended the week-long intensive. \nThis Mini-CCD will focus on tools for congregations to talk about and identify their unique purpose as a faith community and how they’re called to be local expressions of the body of Christ in the neighborhoods in which they’ve been planted. Participants will learn several core models of the college and engage in meaningful conversations\, both with participants from their own congregations and with leaders from churches across the diocese. Individuals are welcome to attend on their own\, but we highly encourage folks to participate together as a team with other members from their congregations. \nRecognizing that the week-long CCD experience is not accessible to everyone\, whether due to scheduling conflicts or participant size limits\, Mini-CCD is one way that we are seeking to integrate these teachings more broadly into a shared vocabulary for the diocese. In addition\, this is also an opportunity for those who are curious about attending the week-long intensive in 2026 to get a taste of what the week might be like. Those who did attend this summer’s week-long intensive are welcome for a refresher of material and to bring along additional members of their congregation. \nSchedule \n9:30 am – Arrivals\n10:00 am – Program Begins\nMid-day – Lunch\n3:00 pm – Program Concludes \nRegistration \nThere is no cost to participate in the Mini-CCD. Lunch is included. Please register no later than the extended deadline of October 12.

SUMMARY:IEES Closing Service
DESCRIPTION:Please join us as we celebrate the closing Eucharist at Iglesia Episcopal de Espíritu Santo (IEES) and mark our gratitude for its impact on the community and our diocese. \nThe ministry we know as IEES has offered community in many iterations over its years. First\, a traditional Episcopal congregation known as the Church of the Holy Spirit\, then as an intentional Spanish-speaking worshipping community\, then without a worshipping community but continuing its core outreach ministries: a food pantry\, afterschool tutoring program\, and much more. \nEarlier this year\, we announced that the ministry at IEES would close after many years of fruitful and impactful ministry in the Forest Park neighborhood of Cincinnati. As these ministries have concluded and as a new expression of Latino ministry emerges through the congregations of our diocese\, we will celebrate with a special service honoring IEES and the people who have been transformed through it. \nClergy who have historically been involved with IEES are invited to vest and process wearing white stoles. Spanish will be incorporated into the liturgy. \nQuestions about this event? \nContact the Rev. Derrick Fetz\, missioner for stewardship\, at dfetz@diosohio.org.

SUMMARY:Anti-Racism Sunday
DESCRIPTION:The Ohio Council of Churches\, its partners and allies are asking Christian congregations and other faith communities around the state to publicly declare racism to be a sin\, an offense to God that is incompatible with God’s loving and just vision for humanity. Sermons and other anti-racism messages are sought on or near Oct. 19. \nAccording to the Rev. Dr. Jack Sullivan\, Jr.\, the council’s Executive Director\, racism contradicts the clear teachings of Jesus Christ. Sullivan cited Luke 10:25-37; John 4:1-26; Matthew 28:19; Matthew 22:37-39. Racism and oppression of the stranger are also condemned in the Hebrew Scriptures\, in passages such as Leviticus 19: 33\, and in the Holy Koran\, noted others on the Ohio Council of Churches’ Anti-Racism Team. \nFor congregations\, the council said\, Anti-Racism Sunday on Oct. 19 could begin a 13-week emphasis on detecting\, disrupting\, and dismantling racism in all of its forms and disguises\, culminating in the nation’s celebration of the birthday of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The council is also offering curricula on its website to support deeper congregational and community discussions about how to address and overcome racism. \n“In an era where hard-fought racial justice and diversity firewalls have been attacked and voided\,” commented Sullivan\, “and as faith is being weaponized to give the scandalous appearance of divine endorsement of racialized hate\, Anti-Racism Sunday is an opportunity for Christians and their neighbors of different faiths to clearly and publicly set the record straight: God does not support racism\, and neither do we!” \nAmerican racism not only hurts Black people\, it specifically hurts working-class Whites and other groups as well\, members of the council’s Anti-Racism Team asserted. And in a policy briefing on economic jeopardy written for the AFL-CIO\, scholar Haney Lopez reported\, “When racism triumphs\, all workers lose.” \n“On Anti-Racism Sunday\,” said Sullivan\, “people of faith will continue … to confront racial disinformation with truth; to counter racial misinformation with facts; and to challenge racial fear with love.” \nParticipating congregations and faith leaders are urged to let the council know about their plans. Emails can be directed to info@ohcouncilchs.org. Anti-racism resources are offered on the council’s website. \nThe council\, now marking 105 years\, is a Jesus Christ movement for unity\, justice and peace. Its ministry represents 17 Christian denominations and is the largest and most diverse group of Christians in Ohio. The council has connections to both the National Council of Churches and the World Council of Churches.

These gatherings create space for conversation\, learning\, and practice as we explore the deep relationships that bind together spirituality\, justice\, ecology\, discipleship\, and evangelism. \nThis event is for church leaders\, creation care advocates\, gardeners\, green team members\, formation leaders\, and all those interested in our care of all creation. The deadline to register is September 5. \nEpiscopal Creation Care Gathering is co-sponsored by Provinces IV and V\, Procter Center and the Diocese of Southern Ohio. \nTo make this gathering as affordable as possible for all\, we are offering three pricing tiers ranging from $100-375. Please choose the rate you are able to pay. If you have the funds to pay the real cost\, that helps offset our scholarship and subsidized rates. Additionally\, you may donate to the scholarship fund if you are able. \nClick here to view lodging options. \nRegister here. \nQuestions about this event?
