SUMMARY:Beloved Community Book Study: Homegoing
DESCRIPTION:Our beloved community book study aims to foster a sense of community as we share and discuss ideas from seminal works of non-fiction and\, now\, fiction. By rooting our individual stories and local stories in our shared scriptural stories\, we aim to follow Jesus more closely and build the beloved community in the Diocese of Southern Ohio. \nOur Fall Book Study will take on Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi. \n\nThe unforgettable New York Times best seller begins with the story of two half-sisters\, separated by forces beyond their control: one sold into slavery\, the other married to a British slaver. Homegoing traces the generations of family who follow\, as their destinies lead them through two continents and three hundred years of history\, each life indelibly drawn\, as Gyasi reveals the legacy of slavery in light of the present day. Effia and Esi are born into different villages in eighteenth-century Ghana. Effia is married off to an Englishman and lives in comfort in the palatial rooms of Cape Coast Castle. Unbeknownst to Effia\, her sister\, Esi\, is imprisoned beneath her in the castle’s dungeons\, sold with thousands of others into the Gold Coast’s booming slave trade\, and shipped off to the United States. One thread of Homegoing follows Effia’s descendants through centuries of warfare in Ghana\, as the Fante and Asante nations wrestle with the slave trade and British colonization. The other thread follows Esi and her children from the plantations of the South to the Civil War and the Great Migration\, from the coal mines of Pratt City\, Alabama\, to the jazz clubs and dope houses of twentieth-century Harlem\, and continues through to the present day. Homegoing makes history visceral\, capturing with singular and stunning immediacy how the memory of captivity is inscribed in the soul of a nation. \nThis book study gathers over three evenings from 7-8 pm: October 7\, November 3\, and December 1.This online gathering takes place on Zoom. In anticipation of this major milestone\, a task force of Southern Ohioans have been working together to gather our history and tell the stories of who we are and who we have been — in discipleship\, in race relationships\, women’s ministries\, LGBTQ+ progress\, and the industrial and economic changes that have affected our communities. \nOn September 4 at 7 pm\, our 150th History & Storytelling Group will host a Zoom webinar for all Southern Ohio Episcopalians. Bishop White will host a panel discussion with diocesan leaders representing significant stories or affinities within our diocese: \n\nThe Rev. DESCRIPTION:The human response to witnessing injustice often defaults to fight\, flight\, or freeze. If we are reactive without having foundational tools to respond\, we may not achieve the result we hoped for. If we turn our eyes to injustice\, we can be found complicit. If we freeze\, we may find ourselves in uncomfortable or perilous positions. The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was intentional in helping to train people in civil discourse and nonviolent approaches to conflict resolution. \nSt. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Granville will offer various trainings to help equip God’s people to engage in situations of discomfort. The first training will be Bystander Intervention Training through Right To Be. This one-hour webinar will provide you with the resources to make a decision of action that matches your level of ability and comfort. \nRight To Be shares\, “How can we take action if we don’t know what to do? Right To Be is offering this free\, one-hour\, interactive training to train people on how to safely intervene when you witness street harassment or experience it yourself. During this training\, you’ll learn a clear\, adaptable\, and expert-approved set of tools that have been proven to reduce the prevalence of street harassment: Right To Be’s 5Ds of bystander intervention. \nWe’ll start by deepening our understanding of street harassment and its impact. Then\, we’ll talk through five strategies for intervention: distract\, delegate\, document\, delay\, and direct\, and how to prioritize your own safety while intervening. We’ll also talk about what to do if you’re worried the violence will turn on you and how to avoid escalating the situation. Then\, we’ll talk about what to do if you experience harassment and give you tools to safely get your power back. \nWe’ll have time at the end for practice. Exit polls show 98.8% of attendees leave the training feeling like there is at least one thing they can do the next time they witness harassment.” \nThe training is online and can be accessed anywhere.
