SUMMARY:Using Picture Books for Racial Reconciliation
DESCRIPTION:Join Miriam McKenney and Emma Helms-Steinmetz in the exploration of Racial Reconciliation using picture books. \nBooks offer an excellent way to enter into challenging topics. Not everyone has the time or inclination to join a book discussion group or read a long book about a challenging subject. Picture books offer a way to discover\, discuss\, and share your stories about topics you probably didn’t learn about in school but are crucial as we work to repair\, heal\, and see God in each other. Miriam will share her methods using picture books and small group discussions that work well in person and online. \nWe will meet via zoom Tuesdays at 11am\, beginning February 28 and finishing April 4. Sign up here.

SUMMARY:A Church Alive: Hearing the Stories of a Queer Church with AIDS
DESCRIPTION:Presented by The Ohio State University Center for the Study of Religion\, LOVEboldly & Stonewall Columbus \nFriday\, March 24\, 7 p.m.\nTrinity Episcopal Church on Capitol Square \nIn 1987 the Metropolitan Community Church of San Francisco (MCCSF) started recording their worship services. The queer-identified church was located in the Castro\, the city’s gay neighborhood and ground zero of the AIDS epidemic there. They recorded the services so that people too sick to attend could still be part of church life. And the recordings that remain tell vivid stories about what the years before AIDS treatment were like for a community of queer believers who turned to church to get through a crisis. \nHistorian Lynne Gerber has been working with MCCSF’s archive of recordings for over a decade. In 2021 she and two co-authors partnered with OSU’s American Religious Sounds Project (ARSP) to create “The Pink and Purple Church in the Castro\,” an online gallery exhibit that tells the story of MCCSF largely through its audio recordings. Gerber and ARSP co-director Isaac Weiner will be in conversation about MCCSF’s history and its archive\, what it tells us about queer faith and the history of AIDS\, and how sound can evoke religious stories\, worlds\, and lives. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Balancing Action and Contemplation
DESCRIPTION:St. Stephen’s\, Columbus\, will offer a six-session Zoom class entitled\, “Balancing Action & Contemplation” will meet weekly from 7 to 8 p.m. starting Thursday\, April 20\, and will run through May 25. This class is designed for folks who have a heart for social justice and will be facilitated by St. Stephen’s parishioner Jamie Massa. \nHere is a brief summary of the six-week class. \n\nContemplation: Some form of contemplative practice is necessary to be able to detach from your own agenda\, your own anger\, your own ego\, and your own fear.\nAlternative Consciousness: What you are doing in contemplation is moving to a level beneath your thoughts: the level of pure and naked being.\nWatching the River: It is helpful to become aware of one’s thoughts and feelings through simple contemplative practices like: centering prayer\, Lectio Divina\, welcoming prayer\, Yoga\, Tai Chi\, and other meditative movement\, wandering or sitting in nature or simply focusing on your breath.\nBecoming Pure in Heart: For Jesus\, prayer seems to be a matter of waiting in love\, returning to love\, trusting that love is the unceasing stream of reality.\nAction AND Contemplation: We need both action and contemplation to have a whole spiritual journey. It doesn’t matter which comes first; action may lead you to contemplation and contemplation may lead you to action.\nSummary: Over time—months\, years\, a full lifetime—contemplation gradually opens our hearts\, minds\, and bodies to Love as our True Self and right action.\n\nMore information and sign up here.

SUMMARY:Growing as Disciples\, Rooted in the Way of Love
DESCRIPTION:Becoming beloved community “will require a qualitative change in our souls as well as a quantitative change in our lives.” –Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. \nThe Becoming Beloved Community Learning Journey is an intensive spiritual formation experience designed to grow disciples and form healers\, reconcilers\, and justice-makers. This spiritual formation cannot happen alone; others are essential. In community\, we will practice together\, rooting in Jesus and the Way of Love. The experience includes two in-person retreats and virtual meetings. Participants must commit to attending the entirety of both retreats. \nDates include:\nMay 11-13: Thursday-Saturday Friday; Procter Camp + Conference Center\nA Zoom check-in in July.\nAugust 17-19: Thursday-Saturday; Procter Camp + Conference Center \nThe Learning Journey is open to all and is rooted in the Episcopal Way and the Jesus wisdom tradition. \nAs you discern joining the Becoming Beloved Community Learning Journey\, please consider the commitment; discipline is necessary for forming discipleship. \nCost is all-inclusive (food/accommodations/materials).\nThe Diocese of Southern Ohio subsidizes at least half the participants’ expenses. \nThe sliding scale includes:\nSingle room: Cost: $475 (supporting community)/$375/$275 (supported by community)\nShared double room: Cost: $375 (supporting community) /$275/$175 (supported by community) \nIf you are interested and are concerned about the cost\, please get in touch with amy@wildrootsinc.com. We believe in an “ask for what you need\, offer what you can” approach. \nApplications are due by April 1. We will share invitations with participants by April 10. Apply online. \nThank you for your interest in growing as a discipline as part of a community of practice. We believe this is one way for us to Become a Church that Looks and Acts like Jesus.
