SUMMARY:Beloved Community Book Study: Homegoing
DESCRIPTION:Our beloved community book study aims to foster a sense of community as we share and discuss ideas from seminal works of non-fiction and\, now\, fiction. By rooting our individual stories and local stories in our shared scriptural stories\, we aim to follow Jesus more closely and build the beloved community in the Diocese of Southern Ohio. \nOur Fall Book Study will take on Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi. \n\nThe unforgettable New York Times best seller begins with the story of two half-sisters\, separated by forces beyond their control: one sold into slavery\, the other married to a British slaver. Homegoing traces the generations of family who follow\, as their destinies lead them through two continents and three hundred years of history\, each life indelibly drawn\, as Gyasi reveals the legacy of slavery in light of the present day. Effia and Esi are born into different villages in eighteenth-century Ghana. Effia is married off to an Englishman and lives in comfort in the palatial rooms of Cape Coast Castle. Unbeknownst to Effia\, her sister\, Esi\, is imprisoned beneath her in the castle’s dungeons\, sold with thousands of others into the Gold Coast’s booming slave trade\, and shipped off to the United States. One thread of Homegoing follows Effia’s descendants through centuries of warfare in Ghana\, as the Fante and Asante nations wrestle with the slave trade and British colonization. The other thread follows Esi and her children from the plantations of the South to the Civil War and the Great Migration\, from the coal mines of Pratt City\, Alabama\, to the jazz clubs and dope houses of twentieth-century Harlem\, and continues through to the present day. Homegoing makes history visceral\, capturing with singular and stunning immediacy how the memory of captivity is inscribed in the soul of a nation. \nThis book study gathers over three evenings from 7-8 pm: October 7\, November 3\, and December 1.This online gathering takes place on Zoom. SUMMARY:Sacred Decision Making Workshop
DESCRIPTION:On November 7-8 Marcia Patton and Nora Percival will present a two day workshop on consensus decision-making at St. Stephen’s\, Columbus.\n\nMarcia and Nora are the authors of Sacred Decision Making: Consensus in Faith Communities. Consensus decision-making in a church setting promotes inclusivity\, is more egalitarian and less patriarchal than other decision-making models\, encourages a collaborative spirit\, fosters the emergence of unanticipated solutions\, offers an alternative to avoiding issues for fear of stirring up trouble\, demonstrates the belief that everyone’s voice is important\, and shows that the people in the room are more important than the decision in question. It embodies the belief that how we work together is as important as what we do and it clearly invites God into the process. Throughout the training Patton and Percival will provide real-life examples\, planning and meeting ideas\, and essential steps to develop a consensus decision-making model. This training is for anyone who wants to explore a method of decision-making that can truly be considered a “kingdom-practice.”\n\nThe workshop will take place at Saint Stephen’s (30 W. Woodruff Avenue). The Friday evening portion will run from 7:00 – 8:30 PM\, and the Saturday session will run from 9-4 with a break for lunch. Attendees are expected to attend both sessions. SUMMARY:Granville Turkey Trot
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the 20th annual Granville Turkey Trot taking place Thanksgiving morning! \nRunners\, walkers\, friends and families of all ages have supported this great run through the streets of Granville all to support the Food Pantry Network of Licking County \nAs in past years\, 100% of the proceeds will benefit the Food Pantry Network of Licking County\, which works year-round to provide food and essentials to individuals and families in need across Licking County. \nIn 2024\, the Granville Turkey Trot raised $131\,000 for the Food Pantry Network and drew over 2\,300 participants ranging in age from toddlers in strollers to seasoned runners in their 80s! Organizers hope to surpass that success in 2025 as the event celebrates its 20th anniversary. \nThe 5K begins at 9:30 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day\, Thursday\, November 27th\, starting and ending at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church\, 107 E. Broadway\, Granville. Participants can sign up online at the early-bird rate of $45 for ages 14+\, $25 for ages 6–13\, and free for children 5 and under. Dogs are also welcome to participate! Early registration closes October 31st. \n“The Granville Turkey Trot has become a beloved Thanksgiving tradition—a chance for friends\, families\, and neighbors to run\, eat\, and nap! It’s amazing to see how this community has shown up for 19 years to make a difference for families in need. We’re really looking forward to celebrating the 20th!” said co-chairs Michelann Marlow and Michele Layman. \nThis community event is made possible by the generous support of local sponsors\, volunteers\, and the partnership between the Granville Recreation District\, the Granville Turkey Trot Committee\, and St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.
