How does anyone know when God is calling them to serve in a certain way? We don’t get burning bushes or nighttime summons without having our sanity questioned. I think God calls us by putting opportunities in front of us at a certain time and we look for pertaining signs through discernment. It’s not always the easy path. For me, I think my best ways to serve God are to hear and amplify unique voices, advocate for non traditional people to have a seat at the table, find actionable ways to act and be in communion, and connect people to find the best ways to make a difference. When that is welcomed, I feel like that may be a call. We have so much power in the church and so much information that no one knows about. We are running in our hamster wheels, hoping someone will see us. I have a unique skill in understanding mission and translating it to something that is meaningful for others so they can engage and act. Using the executive skills I learned in a career with P&G, Coty, and consulting to help the DSO collaborate more, set priorities, to bring Jesus to more people, in different venues seems like it may be the right place for me to be, as I continue to look for ways to support my family and walk on the path God has laid out for me. Having experienced the shortcomings with the current Budget process and written out our current processes and gaps for the Budget and Finance committees, I would like to continue to do this work with Bishop White.

I have been a member of St. George’s Dayton for over 35 years. I have served on the parish Buildings & Ground Commission, on Vestry and as Junior Warden. Currently I serve as the parish Treasurer and chair of the Trustees Trustees of the Endowment Commission as well as being a member of our Altar Guild. I have been and currently am a lay delegate for the Diocese Convention. I also serve on the Board of Trustees and Finance Committee of the Washington Township-Centerville Public Library and am a member, and past Treasurer, of the Board of Directors of the Ohio Library Council, a non-profit association supporting public libraries throughout the State of Ohio. In 2023 I retired from the Economics Faculty of Wright State University and have over 20 years experience in business planning and management, I provide Quality Management consulting to small organizations in the Dayton area.

God provides us, individually and collectively, the resources with which to do the work that Jesus told us to do. How the Diocese uses those resources to further our Mission is one of the most important aspects of the work of the Budget Committee. Another is explaining how that budget enhances the work of the Church. I believe my skills and experience would benefit the Diocese in the creation of a sustainable and equitable budget and in communicating budget priorities and how parish mission shares support those priorities to my own and other congregations of the Diocese.

Budget Committee, Clergy

Elect one (1) clergy for a three-year term (Class of 2026)

Diocesan Council, Clergy

Elect two (2) clergy for a three-year term (Class of 2026). Both nominees elected.

I am the rector of St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church in Dublin, OH. I served on the Nominating Committee for the 10th Bishop of Southern Ohio, and I am also active in the greater Columbus area clericus where we have engaged in joint advertising, vestry formation days, and the Columbus Pride Mass. I have also served on analogous bodies to our Diocesan Council in the Dioceses of East Tennessee and Nebraska.

I believe God is at work in, at, and through the diocese of Southern Ohio. It is a privilege to serve in a diocese where the Holy Spirit is definitely up to something. I feel called to support the incoming bishop in practicing a transparent, Jesus-centered theology of money. I also feel called to leverage all of the resources of the Diocese to support ministry at the local level.

I am the Pastor / Priest at All Saints Church – A Lutheran/Episcopal Community in Washington Court House and the Rector at St. Mary’s Episcopal in Hillsboro. I have served on Diocesan Council for the last two years to fill vacated positions by appointment of the bishop. I serve on the Commission on Creation Care and Environmental Justice and the Board of Advisors for Procter Center. I am also currently working on my Doctor of Ministry in Congregational Development degree through Bexley-Seabury seminary focusing on rural and small-town congregations.

I feel very strongly that the Diocesan Council should reflect the diversity of the diocese. I bring representation from on of our mixed denomination congregations (the only Episcopal-Lutheran federated congregation in both the diocese and the synod (ELCA)). I bring representation from south-central Ohio, Appalachia, small-city, and rural (farming) congregants. These are voices that I feel called to bring to the table as we seek God’s purpose for this diocese.

God knows my heart and deep care for the people of the Diocese of Southern Ohio in all aspects of community life. I believe God is calling experienced people to welcome our new Bishop and to effect a smooth transition. After 6 years on the Budget Committee and 3 years on Diocesan Council, I have plenty of experience and history to fit this role. A fellow Council member reminded me recently of an admonition that applies to our work as a body: Hebrews 10:24 – And let us consider how to spur one another on to love and good deeds.

Standing Committee, Clergy

Elect one (1) clergy for a three-year term

I currently serve as the Priest-in-Charge at All Saints Episcopal Church in Cincinnati. One of our primary goals at All Saints is to be a hub of hospitality and radical welcome for our neighborhood. We open our doors to a plethora of community groups and partner with them to invite our neighbors into deeper relationship with God and one another. From organizing free community dinners to offering children’s programming in the summer to hosting Cincinnati’s first ever “Human Library,” our understanding of ourselves as a parish is deeply intertwined with our identity as Christ’s living presence in our community.

In my former Diocese of West Tennessee, I led as co-chair of the Diocesan Clericus Planning Committee, participated as chaplain to diocesan youth, and hosted a monthly live podcast recording that featured faith leaders across Memphis. In June of 2020, my husband and I moved to Cincinnati as he began his medical residency. Since moving to the Diocese of Southern Ohio, I have served on the Commission on Congregational Life, as a chaplain for Procter Summer Camp, and as a member of the cohort for New and Redeveloping Episcopal Communities. I’m also currently serving as a member of our Bishop Transition Committee, specifically as co-chair of the Meet and Greet Week which took place in mid-September.

As the solo priest of a vibrant, redeveloping congregation, I am closely attuned to the needs of our parishioners and the gifts and challenges that come with small parish life. Because of this, I feel uniquely positioned to serve as a member of our Standing Committee. After working in mostly large and financially resourced parishes, I now find myself leading a community that more closely resembles the majority of Episcopal churches across the country. I believe a deep understanding of this parochial perspective is vital in discerning all that God is calling our church to become.

Through my recent task of imagining, developing, and implementing the five day Meet and Greet Week with our Bishop Nominees, I fell in love with this diocese in a whole new way. In the work of sorting through over 175 questions submitted for the M&G events, in journeying by bus through the wide array of landscapes and faith communities throughout our diocese, and in helping to introduce our Bishop Nominees to the wonderful folks who live and worship here, I was able to have a front row seat to see the goodness and potential our diocese has to offer. I believe my gifts in visioning, collegial collaboration, and effective leadership would all serve me well in this role. Finally, I strongly believe that the voice of female clergy must be present and represented on all of our diocesan commissions and committees. Currently, there are no female clergy who sit on our Standing Committee.

As our diocese enters this new season with our next bishop, I’d be honored to serve in this capacity and pray that the Holy Spirit would equip me with wisdom, energy, and enthusiasm for the work ahead.

I have served in a variety of positions and levels as an ordained person for the last 31 years. In addtion to my work as a parish priest, serving as an assitant, priest-in-charge, and rector, in congregations small and large, well-resourced and not, in four dioceses, and three provinces, I spent seven years as a member of the executive staff of the Diocese of Milwaukee. I have served on Commissions on Ministry in two dioceses, and was chair of the Annual Clergy Conference plannng committee in a third, and been chaplain to a Bishop Search Committee. I served as clergy Deputy to three General Conventions, including two as chair of the deputation.
For the past five years, I have served as a Trustee of the Diocese here in Southern Ohio, and have enjoyed working with Bishops Breidenthal and Smith and the other Trustees, in that capacity. Beyond the church, I have been an advocate for the abolition of the death penalty, served on the board a large clinic providing free medical and dental care, and, in the secular arena, served as a poll worker during elections, local, state, and national, for several years.

My experience in the Church has been both broad and deep. I believe that I have a strong understanding and practical knowledge of the governance structures of the Church in general, and of the role of the Standing Committee, specifically, as a ‘council of advice’ for the ecclesiastical authority. The Standing Committee can and should play an important role in supporting a newly elected bishop establish her or himself in a new ministry, and in a new diocese. I believe that God has equipped me with a temperment which seeks consensus in making important decisions, is reasonable and open to looking at even difficult issues in an objective and unbiased way, and believes in supporting the governace structure of the Church as means for promoting healthy congregations carrying out God’s ministry, and not as a cudgel with which to bludgeon others. I have observed both scenarios, for good and ill. The exercise of canonical authority is a privilege given to some, and I believe it is encumbent on all who are given that privilege, in whatever role and to whatever degree, to exercise it with a spirit of charity and forebearance, recognizing that authority is best exercised within a community which models trust, openess, and faithfulness, seeking always the leading of the Holy Spirit.

Standing Committee, Lay

Elect one (1) lay person for a three-year term (Class of 2026)

I initially came to the Episcopal family by bringing my aging mother-in-law to services. That was followed by officially becoming an Episcopalian, starting out as a congregant, then a vestry member, then senior warden, then Diocesan level roles. I am currently the senior warden at a very small congregation, Holy Trinity Cincinnati (Kenwood, Madeira area). I served 3 years on Diocesan Council (appointed by Bishop Breidenthal) followed by the last 3 years on Standing Committee. I am a firm believer that even small congregations can have an outsized impact on our surrounding communities, and Holy Trinity does so, in part by supporting an affordable daycare/preschool that serves nearly 100 families in our area. I spent 40 years in corporate life and feel those skills have helped with the work done by Diocesan Council and Standing Committee. I am also very involved with our local community, being a member of the Madeira City planning commission who serves the citizens and city council, and founding the Madeira City tree board who promotes smart urban forestry and care of our local environment.

God called me to the Episcopal community nearly two decades ago, and I have felt compelled to join in the service of our Diocesan family. The past 3 years on Standing Committee have been a whirlwind, going from recognizing Bishop Breidenthal’s many contributions and sudden departure, to temporarily holding ecclesiastical authority, to facilitating the appointment of Bishop Smith as Bishop Provisional, to helping the process of finding our 10th Bishop Diocesan. It would be very fulfilling to see this work through to the on-boarding of Rev. Canon Kristin Uffelman White. I believe the continuity will help her have a strong start and help us stay focused on the priorities, needs and desires of our Diocese that became increasingly evident over the past 3 years.

In addition to the Bishop transition, I see at least three other areas that I feel a keen interest.

  • We have a strong group of people seeking their role as Deacons and Priests and it would be very exciting to help them in their quests.
  • As an Environmental Scientist, I see the critical importance in supporting the great work happening in the Diocese on Creation Care and Environmental Justice, and all of the broader work on Becoming Beloved Community.
  • I feel it is important to find ways to support and promote the work of ALL of our congregations, including the smallest, the most remote, the most unique, and the least resourced.

I have been a member at St. Peter’s in Delaware for over 20 years. During my time there I have served in many roles from Vestry member, Parish Administrator and Sunday School teacher to my current ministries on Altar Guild, the parish Choir and chair of the Finance Committee. I also serve on the Board of Andrews House, a non-profit community organization housed on the St. Peter’s campus.

I am a cradle Episcopalian and a PK, well now a BK, aka Bishop’s kid. My dad is the Rt. Rev. Stephen T. Lane current provisional Bishop in the Diocese of Rochester, where I grew up. I came to Ohio via Oberlin College where I met my husband, a native of Sunbury, Ohio, where we now reside with our 3 kids. We would visit St. Peter’s when we would come home from college and I was always touched that Tom Van Brunt would remember us! After graduate school we moved back to the area and became members shortly before our 20 year old son was born.

As for participation in the life of the diocese and the larger church I, like many Ohio Episcopalians, eagerly volunteered when General Convention came to Columbus in 2006. I was quickly made a Convention Coordinator in Public Safety and have served the national church in that capacity at every General Convention since. I will be in Louisville this summer behind the scenes making sure everything runs smoothly. Closer to home my children have all grown up attending Procter Camp in the summer and I love the closing chapel service at the end of each camp week. I have been a delegate to Diocesan Convention in the past, and helped plan childcare for Diocesan Convention in Columbus as well.

To be honest I had not considered running for Standing Committee until a nudge from my priest, Fr. David Kendall-Sperry. But as I considered his suggestion, I realized that I do feel called to serve. I am an educator turned school administrator because I wanted to have a greater impact on the life of students than I could in just my own classroom. The same could be said for serving on Standing Committee. While I have great love for my parish, I think I have served in just about every role possible there as a lay person, and perhaps it is time to turn my attention to the diocese.

Being in the far northernmost parish of the diocese it can get a little lonely at times, as we feel far from the gaze of diocesan HQ in Cincy. Participation on Standing Committee not only allows me the opportunity to help welcome and support our new Bishop, but to help shrink the distance between my parish and the diocese. Making these connections will only help strengthen St. Peter’s as we step into a new and exciting future for the diocese.

Trustee of the Diocese

Elect one (1) lay or clergy, for a five-year term (Class of 2028)

As the Priest-in-Charge of The Northern Miami Valley Cluster, including Epiphany, Urbana and Our Saviour, Mechanicsburg, I have the honor of partnering with many gifted lay leaders to revitalize the Episcopal expression of Christianity in a small-town context — we have grown spiritually and numerically. I serve the wider community in a number of ways through the local ministerial association, Rotary Club, The African American Heritage District Committee, and as an organizational coach for non-profits. At the diocesan level, I serve as the Missioner for the Northwest Region and am the Second Vice Chair of the Procter Camp and Conference Center Board. While in Southern Ohio previously, I was on the Commission on Congregational Life, and on a communications think tank. In other dioceses, I served on Diocesan Council, Standing Committee and on various race justice groups and mission strategy committees.

After being approached to consider a nomination for this position, I began reflecting on the movement of the Holy Spirit in this call. This is what surfaced through such prayerful exploration:

  • stewardship of resources is a passion of mine and have led two churches with multi-million dollar endowments and investments to grow their capacity and apply the resources to support the community-identified missional priorities;
  • the new bishop needs people associated with the financial components of the Diocese who can stay committed to the financial necessities of the ministry and creatively and boldly apply resources to the emerging missional priorities;
  • the election of a new bishop gives me renewed energy and excitement to serve the Diocese in this capacity;
  • -my background in public relations gives me the ability to explain financial matters using accessible language and formats;
  • my commitment to transparency of how money is spent and how it can be spent have been a priority of mine in connection with all of the churches and institutions I have served; and
  • my background as the former Director of Operations of my family company afforded me the opportunity to work with finances on both macro and micro levels to keep the company financially solid.

My history in the diocese began in 1971 when I joined the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Ohio University. I was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Athens from1971 until I retired in 2011. I served a variety of roles in the parish including two terms on the vestry, service as a Eucharistic Minister, and volunteer work in various ministries in the parish.

During my vestry service I was clerk for two years in the early 1980s and Senior Warden during the interim period in the early 2000s after the departure of the Reverend Mike Morgan and the calling of the Reverend William Carroll. This period was particularly challenging as there were few clergy available in the diocese to serve as supply. We often conducted morning prayer during the several years we were engaged in our search.

While on sabbatical and a leave of absence from Ohio University from 1991 to 1993 I attended St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Birmingham, Alabama. I taught Sunday School for young teens and was responsible for confirmation classes. When I returned to Ohio, my wife Ann, and I began attending St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Ashland, Ohio. Ann joined the faculty of Ashland University and we began participating in St. Matthew’s worship and ministry as well as maintaining active membership at Good Shepherd. I participated in the parish effort to raise funds for parish development and Bellwether Farm. St. Matthews is a small parish with limited resources. Saint Matthew’s developed a program for a capital campaign under my leadership and was successful in reaching its goal to provide badly needed funds for repairs to the building.

My career at Ohio University included a five-year term as chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, member of College and University wide committees, and chair of various ad hoc committees. I was also active in regional, national, and international professional societies and held elective office in several of them. My career in higher education provided valuable lessons in setting aside personal interests for the benefit of the collective good. Many generous donors provided resources for the institutions I have been affiliated with. These resources make possible the high quality educational experience offered to students. A key element of these contributions is the focus on the mission of the organization by donors and those charged with oversight and implementation of institutional goals.

Ann and I retired to Columbus in 2011 and became active members at St. John’s in Worthington. We became ushers, lay Eucharistic ministers and were active in other ministries. I became chair of the ad hoc committee on the Columbarium and Ann was active in the prayer shawl ministry.

The Baptismal Covenant enjoins us to belief in Christ and his mission on earth. It asks us to proclaim by word and deed the good news of God in Christ. The Covenant includes five actions to be carried out: teaching and fellowship with breaking of bread and prayer, perseverance in resisting evil and repentance when one sins, proclaiming the gospel, to seek and serve Christ in all persons, and striving for justice and respect for the dignity of all persons. Our forebears have generously endowed our mission in fulfilling the Baptismal Covenant. I hope to be able to join in advancing this endeavor by applying the lessons of stewardship, patience, faith, and justice as a member of the Trustees of the Diocese of Southern Ohio.

Elect one (1) lay person to a three-year, unexpired term (Class of 2026)

I am in my second prayerful discernment and very humble service as Senior Warden of the Parish of St. Andrew’s Cincinnati, located in the Evanston Community. I served as an Acolyte and as a Member of the Youth Group in high school, attended St. Andrew’s during college at the University of Cincinnati and served as the Vice-President of the Men of St. Andrew’s. As an adult, my worship has been regular for the better part of 59 years. I served previously as Junior Warden, a Vestry Person, and Member of the Chancel Choir. Currently, I serve as an Interim Trustee of the Diocese of Southern Ohio , a Member of the Board of the Minority Empowerment Initiative Trust, the Diocesan Task Force on Reparations and Chair of its Sub-Committee for the proposed selection of a Black Missioner for the Diocese. I am parish Representative to the Union of Black Episcopalians , Bishop Herbert Thompson Chapter and a Member of the Charles P. Taft Lecture Committee of Christ Church Cathedral.

I am a former Councilman and two term Vice-Mayor of Cincinnati, of nearly 9 years, a former 7 year Member of the Ohio House of Representatives and Member of the Ohio House Committee on Finance and Appropriations, Chair of the Criminal Law Committee and Chair of the bicameral Committee on Prison Inspections. I was appointed Judge of the Hamilton County Municipal Court in 2010 by Governor Ted Strickland and have served in this ministry for nearly 14 years.

I feel that God has called me to this role because I physically felt that summons when I was asked to consider the Interim role of Trustee to the William Cooper Procter Fund-to which I breathlessly said, “Yes, of course and I am honored to be asked” when Trustee Jon Boss phoned me on behalf of the Bishop and the Trustees. Immediately my mind raced back through the years and my private and public service and the sense of humility I felt-and still feel-as as representative from the Parish of St. Andrew’s and to the important representative role of the William Cooper Procter Fund and the Bishop. I can still see the aged Charles P. Taft walking down the aisle at the Ordination of Bishop John McGill Krumm in 1972 at Christ Church Cathedral when I prayed that I could earn humble servant work for Christ following the historical journey of Jesus. I feel that God is calling me as he has prepared me, through community and church service to serve by years of preparation-with no knowledge of what lay ahead.

Trustee of the Church Foundation

Elect one (1) clergy or lay person to a five-year term (Class of 2028)

I am the River Cities Missioner and responsible for lifting up and supporting St. Peter’s in Gallipolis and Grace in Pomeroy. I recently served as chaplain to the Nominating Committee for the 10th Bishop of Southern Ohio. I am a member of the Procter Board and the sesquicentennial committee. In the larger community, I serve as a drug court chaplain in Scioto County.

I have a deep and abiding love for our places of worship in southern Ohio. Seeing them kept in good condition for worship and ministry is important to me. Having served on the Church Foundation, I know the importance a grant or loan can make to a congregation’s continued vitality. I believe I am called to help congregations be both stable and vital through the work of the Foundation.

I am the rector of Saint Mark’s in Columbus (Upper Arlington) and currently serve at the Diocesan level on the Commission on Ministry and the Dispatch of Business committee.

In over 25 years of ordained ministry, I have found that our congregations’ buildings are both our greatest strength and our biggest challenge. The ability to provide hospitality and welcome and to provide ministry and programming on our own schedules is an invaluable resource. However, maintaining, repairing and paying for our buildings require a huge amount of time and energy from all of our congregations and deferring that work leads to bigger problems. I would like to be a part of helping to bring Diocesan resources to our congregations in this area.

Regional Disciplinary Board, clergy

Elect one (1) clergy for a three-year term (Class of 2026)

I have been at St. James, Cincinnati for 7 years, first as Priest-in-Charge and, since mid-2019, as Rector. I am very active in the Westwood neighborhood of Cincinnati, currently serving as President of the Board of a neighborhood outreach center, as a member of the neighborhood council, and on the board of the Gamble Nippert YMCA. From 2013-2022 I was on the Board of Bexley Seabury Seminary. During that time I served as Co-Chair of the Presidential Search Committee, and, in the last two years, as Vice-Chair of the Board. In addition to my current service on the Regional Disciplinary Board as the clergy representative from Southern Ohio, I have served on the Commission on Congregational Life and as a Transition Consultant.

This is one of those rare positions in the Church in which one hopes one never has to do any work. Given my background, however, I am well-suited to step in should the need arise. Except for a brief time after moving to Southern Ohio, since 2011 I have served on Disciplinary Boards in the Dioceses of Ohio and Southern Ohio and, since its inception, on the Regional Disciplinary Board. While in the Diocese of Ohio, I served on the Hearing Panel for a fairly complicated disciplinary matter, making me one of a handful of clergy in The Episcopal Church who has firsthand experience in that capacity.

From 1999-2007 I was on the diocesan staff in the Diocese of Ohio working with clergy and congregations. While I was not directly involved in disciplinary matters, I learned more than I wanted to about them and, more importantly, about the impact of allegations of misconduct on parishes and clergy. These are painful processes, making it essential that those charged with doing this work are both compassionate and committed to holding clergy accountable for their behavior and actions. If called upon to serve, I will do my best to listen for the still, small voice of God and to balance mercy and justice.

Presently, I am the priest-in-charge of All Saint’s Episcopal Church in Portsmouth and Christ Episcopal Church, Ironton. I was a shepherd to one of the candidates for bishop in the most recent election and I continue to serve on the Transition Team. I am involved in the communities of Ironton and Portsmouth. Previously, I served as a tribunal judge.

If I were required to exercise my role on the disciplinary board, I am prepared for that moment. I received from the Catholic University of America, Washington, District of Columbia, a degree in canon law. My licentiate thesis was on the removal of a member of the clergy from the clerical state. My approach to this ministry would be one rooted in the words of the prophet Micah, “to love tenderly and act justly.”

I served Grace Church, Cincinnati as Interim Rector in 1989-90. When Grace became a lay-led congregation I returned as long term supply priest from about 2015 until the present.

In the Diocese I have served on the Liturgical Commission, the Commission on Congregational Life and the Trustees of the Church Foundation. I have also had experience working with the Chancellor on Constitution and Canons and on the Title IV Diocesan Disiplinary Board.

In the larger community I am involved with numerous art, historical preservation and gardening organizations.

I believe very strongly that no one should be unsafe in God’s comunity. We need to pay attention to the nature of our own and others’ relationships with fellow members of God’s Body. I have the interest and, I think, the experience to fill this position.

Procter Board of Directors

Elect one (1) clergy or lay person to a three-year term (Class of 2026)

I live and breathe church ministry, having dedicated most of my professional career, since graduating high school in 2006, to serving young people and their families. I currently serve as the Minister for Family Discipleship at Church of the Redeemer, overseeing our family ministry team and programming for children up to young adults. My concentrated focus is planning and implementing programs for 7th-12th grade students, which includes an after school program that runs Monday-Thursday in partnership with a local high school. At the diocesan level, I have assisted in pulling together a network of youth leaders throughout the diocese in order for us to determine how we can collaborate and share time, energy, and resources to do exceptional youth ministry together.

Procter has been an invaluable resource for South Ohio. Even in my couple of years within this diocese, I have heard the stories of transformation Procter has brought to the lives of folks young and old. I would be honored to be part of the revitalization and re-visioning for Procter’s next season, to explore the possibilities of inspiring and transformational programs that can be offered for our youth across South Ohio, and to include our young people’s voices at the table as we hope and dream for the future of Procter.

Province V Deputy, clergy

Elect one (1) clergy for a one-year term

I have recently returned to the Diocese of Southern Ohio after several years serving congregations outside the Diocese. In the half year since I began as rector of Christ Church, Springfield, I have renewed contacts with other faith communities in our neighborhood, and participated in the regional Episcopal clergy group. I have also become involved in several community organizations in the Springfield area. In other dioceses, I have served on an episcopal Transition Committee, committees on Constitution and Canons, the Commission on Ministry, Commission on Racism, and as president of the diocesan clergy association. While serving in the Diocese of Niagara (Canada), I was also appointed to the Bishop’s Task Force on Human Trafficking.

Long before I was ordained, I chaperoned youth representatives at provincial youth network meetings. I remember these conferences as incredibly creative, and energizing for my own ministry with youth at the time.
I believe that often, parishes and dioceses work better when they cooperate, share, and learn from each other. As someone who has served in various capacities (lay children’s/youth minister, as an associate at a large parish, an interim, and a rector at parishes of different sizes), I believe that I would be able to envision ways in which the resources of the province might impact parishes of all sizes.

Province V Deputy, lay

Elect two (2) lay people for a one-year term. Both nominees elected.

I’m a member of St. Stephen’s, Columbus. I’ve been on Vestry one term; I served as Treasurer for four years; and I’m currently the chair of the Endowment Committee. I also served on the last Search Committee to find a new rector for our church. I’m also one of the founding members of our successful, lay-led midday prayer service every Wednesday at St. Stephen’s. Our Wednesday service has been going strong for 13 years now.

At the diocesan level, I’ve served for the last two years on the Province V Executive Board, as the representative from our diocese. I’ve also been an alternate deputy to General Convention from our diocese. Earlier this year, I joined the council of PIMIL, that organization that raises funds for scholarships for students in Liberia.

At the community level, my primary volunteer work has been serving for over a decade on the board of the condominium community where my husband and I have lived.

Episcopal provinces have the opportunity to address many of the same issues as our Episcopal dioceses do, even though provinces don’t have the same authority or resources as dioceses. Ideally, provinces work closely in partnership with their dioceses, enhancing the work of the dioceses and filling in some gaps by doing certain kinds of work that may best be dealt with at the regional, interstate level. Thankfully, I can say from first-hand experience that Province V, the province to which Southern Ohio belongs, works successfully and collaboratively in this way. I would like to have this new opportunity to serve Southern Ohio at the provincial level, which is another way of doing God’s work within our Episcopal Church.

During the COVID years, I had the pleasure of working with Heather Barta, Province V Coordinator in facilitating the Province V Suicide Prevention Network. At the last Big Province Gathering in South Bend, Indiana in 2022, the network hosted the Soul Shop workshop on how to bring mental health ministry into our congregations. The network also worked with Steven Cook, a VTS Old Testament professor and Fr. Bob Flanigan from the Diocese of New York, in test piloting a Bible study that addresses examples of suicide ideation and God’s responses in scripture. The network submitted a resolution for additional funding for Suicide Prevention training to General Convention 2022. The resolution passed, but was not funded. God had a hand in all of this work at Province V.
