“May we have the audacity to believe in the promises of God.”
In the days leading to her installation the week before last, Archbishop Sarah Mullally walked the pilgrim’s path from St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, to Canterbury Cathedral. That pilgrimage has been made by other faithful Christians, other archbishops of Canterbury, through years and centuries.
As she walked, Archbishop Sarah prayed the prayer that student chaplains at the Archbishop’s School had written for her journey:
“Strengthen us in faith,
Grant us a heart like Christ’s,
gentle, humble, and devoted to the truth,
So that we may share the Gospel with joy.”
We, too, have walked a pilgrim’s path through this journey of Lent. I pray that your faith has been strengthened in these 40 days. I pray that you have been guided by the Spirit, that you have known Christ’s presence in your midst, that you have experienced God’s Good News.
It is toward something, this faith we share. It’s not ours to hold and keep hidden, in a garden or an upper room. The archbishop bids us toward action—our feet in motion, our hearts enlivened.
On that first Easter morning, it was Mary Magdalene who made the journey to the tomb, who found the stone rolled away, who ran and told the others. She was the one who stood, heartbroken and weeping, the one who heard Jesus say her name. And she, that first witness to the miracle of resurrection, returned to proclaim: “I have seen the Lord.”
As we navigate a world of fear and heartbreak, of violence and degradation, of separateness and division, may we fix our eyes on the boldness of that promise, trusting indeed that—with God—nothing will be impossible.
And may the Good News of God in Christ be a message we share generously, with joy.
“I have seen the Lord.”

“Que tengamos la audacia de creer en las promesas de Dios”.
En los días previos a su instalación, la semana antepasada, la arzobispa Sarah Mullally recorrió el camino de peregrinación desde la catedral de San Pablo en Londres hasta la catedral de Canterbury. Esa peregrinación ha sido realizada por otros cristianos fieles, otros arzobispos de Canterbury, a lo largo de años y siglos.
Mientras caminaba, la arzobispa Sarah rezaba la oración que los capellanes estudiantes de la Escuela del Arzobispo habían escrito para su viaje:
“Fortalézcanos en la fe,
Concédenos un corazón como el de Cristo,
Gentil, humilde y devoto de la verdad,
Para que podamos compartir el Evangelio con alegría”.
Nosotros también hemos recorrido el camino de un peregrino en este viaje de Cuaresma. Rezo para que tu fe se haya fortalecido en estos 40 días. Rezo para que hayas sido guiado por el Espíritu, para que hayas conocido la presencia de Cristo en tu medio, para que hayas experimentado las Buenas Nuevas de Dios.
Es hacia algo, esa fe que compartimos. No es nuestro para guardarlo y esconderlo, ni en un jardín ni en una habitación superior. La arzobispa nos invita a la acción: nuestros pies en movimiento, nuestros corazones vivificados.
En aquella primera mañana de Pascua, fue María Magdalena quien hizo el viaje hasta la tumba, quien encontró la piedra rodada, quien corrió y se lo contó a los demás. Ella fue quien se quedó de pie, con el corazón roto y llorando, la que escuchó a Jesús decir su nombre. Y ella, esa primera testigo del milagro de la resurrección, volvió para proclamar: “He visto al Señor”.
Mientras navegamos por un mundo de miedo y desamor, de violencia y degradación, de separación y división, que fijemos la mirada en la audacia de esa promesa, confiando en verdad en que—con Dios—nada será imposible.
Y que la Buena Nueva de Dios en Cristo sea un mensaje que compartamos generosamente, con alegría.
“He visto al Señor”.
