Bishop White has endorsed the use of Season of Creation, A Celebration Guide for Episcopal Parishes, by Southern Ohio congregations during this year’s Season of Creation, which runs from September 1 to October 4. The guide, which provides alternate readings and worship resources, was developed by an ecumenical coalition of partners from around the world, including the Rt. Rev. Marc Andrus, bishop of California. Forty-two dioceses in the Episcopal Church have endorsed its use in 2024.
As your congregation plans for the Season of Creation, remember that members of the Creation Care and Environmental Justice Commission are available as speakers. This can be weeknight, Sunday formation time, preaching, Zoom or in person. Contact the commission members at ccej@diosohio.org.
Additional online resources include:
- Francis and Friends, a free formation resource created by the Rev. Richard Nelson, an Episcopal priest. It focuses on experiencing God in creation and increasing our love for God, the human family and all creation as inspired by St. Francis and St. Clare. The lessons/activities in each section are engaging and you can adapt according to age. A leader’s guide provides helpful ways to map out the lessons for different scenarios, such as a VBS or a retreat weekend.
- Plastic Jesus, a downloadable resource from Creation Care Ministries, helps congregations think more deeply about the ways that plastics impact our lives and God’s creation.
- Deb Baker’s (New Hampshire) Season of Creation formation program, includes family material.
- Root & Vine is a blog with specific nature-based readings, reflective questions, etc.
- Episcopal Relief & Development offers the Abundant Life Garden Project, with downloadable workbooks for youth for workshops or Sunday school lessons.
The Rev. Craig Foster serves as co-chair of the Creation Care and Environmental Justice Commission.
