Canon Getreu to return to full-time parish ministry

The Rev. Canon David Getreu, who has served the diocese part-time since 2020, most recently as canon for finance and budget, has announced that he will resign his diocesan position on December 31 and return to full-time parish ministry at the beginning of 2024. He is rector of an innovative four-parish collaboration in southeast Ohio that includes St. Philip’s, Circleville; St. Paul’s, Chillicothe; St. John’s, Lancaster; and St. Paul’s in Logan. In his full-time parish role, he will continue to be known as Canon Getreu.

“David has served our diocese during a pivotal time of transition, and I am grateful to him for his tireless work in developing our budgets, clarifying our understanding of available sources of revenue, and facilitating the ministry of governance bodies,” Bishop Wayne Smith said. “Bishop-elect White and the diocese’s financial leadership will continue to benefit from the groundwork he has laid.”

“During my sabbatical last summer, I was able to spend time in thought and prayer about my future ministry,” Canon Getreu said. “That opportunity allowed me to discern that I am called to focus on the transformative congregational ministry model we are developing in southeast Ohio. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve on the diocesan staff in the last several years, and I look forward to the new chapter now beginning in our common life.”
