Year of Jesus with Bishop White: On Being Astonished

by the Rt. Rev. Kristin Uffelman White

In the reading from John’s gospel that we heard yesterday, I find myself noticing how often, maybe always, Jesus says the thing that really is the thing…and how often the others with him…do not. He meets the woman at the well, he asks for what he needs, he tells her about living water, and about her own life. And then the disciples show up.

Notice what they don’t say:

“Just then his disciples came. They were astonished that he was speaking with a woman, but no one said, “What do you want?” or, “Why are you speaking with her?”

Why do you think the disciples were astonished, and yet did not ask? I find myself wondering how often I do the same, and trying to be curious about why.

What does this look like, for you? How do we find our way, faithfully, with courage and grace and care, to talk about the thing that really is the most important thing?
